Federal States Launch Communication Initiative “Der ÖGD – Protects. Helps. Explains.” to Increase Visibility of Local Health Offices
On September 19, 2025, the new brand of the Public Health Service (ÖGD) was launched: “Der ÖGD – Protects. Helps. Explains.”. It was developed jointly by the 16 state health ministries and the Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG). The goal is to make the work of around 380 local health offices more visible and to underline their importance for the population.
The new communication initiative is part of the “Public Health Service Pact” agreed in 2020. In addition to poster campaigns, social media activities, and explanatory videos, a commercial featuring actor Simon Gosejohann raises awareness in a humorous way. A nationwide website has also been launched, guiding citizens on when and how to contact their local health office. An integrated postal code search makes direct contact easier.
Thuringia’s Minister of Health, Katharina Schenk, emphasized: “For the first time, we are creating a nationwide unified image of the Public Health Service – clear, approachable, and understandable.” This strengthens trust in the work of health offices. Dr. Johannes Nießen, Acting Head of the BIÖG, also highlighted that the ÖGD is active in many areas – from infection control and hygiene to school entrance examinations and environmental medicine.
The Public Health Service is a central pillar of healthcare provision in Germany. Its responsibilities range from vaccination and counseling services to addiction prevention and drinking water protection. With the new brand, its role in citizens’ everyday lives will become more visible.
