Carsten Linnemann set to become health minister

CDU Secretary General Carsten Linnemann is set to become Germany’s new federal health minister. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced the personnel decision in Berlin.

Linnemann is expected to succeed Nina Warken. Under the planned reshuffle, Warken will move to the Chancellery and take over its leadership. The move is part of a broader reorganization of senior Union posts in government and parliament.

Several key posts are changing

The decision follows further changes at the top of the CDU and CSU parliamentary setup. Thorsten Frei is to leave the Chancellery and move to the leadership of the Union parliamentary group, succeeding Jens Spahn.

Warken had already been discussed as Frei’s successor. According to the information available, she initially weighed the decision for family reasons. It remains unclear who will replace Linnemann as CDU secretary general.

Spahn’s resignation triggered the reshuffle

Spahn stepped down as head of the Union parliamentary group after making public that he and his husband Daniel Funke had had a child with the help of a surrogate mother in the United States. The move drew sharp criticism, including from within the Union.

Surrogacy is prohibited in Germany. It was not stated whether Spahn intends to keep his seat in the Bundestag.

For the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, the planned appointment mainly means another change in the political leadership structure at the Federal Ministry of Health. Initial information did not specify which policy priorities Linnemann would set in the role.
