Ryan Reynolds launches Parkinson’s non-motor symptom campaign
Actor and entrepreneur Ryan Reynolds, together with Acadia Pharmaceuticals, has announced a new nationwide disease awareness initiative called More to Parkinson’s. The campaign aims to broaden understanding of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, with a particular focus on hallucinations and delusions that can be common but are often insufficiently recognized in routine care.
Common symptoms, limited proactive reporting
According to the campaign information, around half of people living with Parkinson’s may experience hallucinations or delusions over the course of the disease. At the same time, many patients reportedly do not raise these symptoms proactively with physicians, which can delay conversations about evaluation and treatment options.
Family experience at the center
Reynolds and his mother, Tammy, are sharing their experience as family caregivers in connection with the Parkinson’s journey of James “Jim” Reynolds, Ryan Reynolds’ father, who died nearly a decade ago. The campaign uses this perspective to encourage earlier and more open discussions of non-motor symptoms between patients, families and care teams.
Multi-channel education and discussion tools
The campaign is designed as a multi-channel program, including videos covering who may be at risk, how symptoms can present and how to talk to a clinician about management. Content is distributed across digital media, social platforms and connected TV. Resources such as discussion guides for families and doctor visits are available via the campaign website: MoretoParkinsons.com.
Context: Parkinson’s and psychosis-related symptoms
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder. In addition to motor symptoms, patients may develop non-motor symptoms. Hallucinations and delusions may be referred to clinically as Parkinson’s disease psychosis and can add substantial burden for patients and caregivers.
