SAP and Fresenius Form Strategic Partnership for a Sovereign, Interoperable, and AI-Based Digital Healthcare Platform

SAP and Fresenius announced their intention to enter into a strategic partnership. The goal of this collaboration is to accelerate innovation in digital healthcare and to establish a future-proof digital backbone for hospitals and medical institutions.

Together, the two partners aim to create a sovereign, interoperable, and AI-enabled healthcare platform that allows the secure use of artificial intelligence while meeting the highest requirements for data protection, security, and regulatory compliance. The focus is on an open, integrated, and data-driven healthcare ecosystem designed to sustainably improve quality, transparency, and efficiency across the entire care continuum.

Digital Sovereignty as a Key Enabler

At the core of the partnership is the development of a custom, scalable healthcare platform. Based on proven SAP technologies such as SAP Business Suite, SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Business Technology Platform, and SAP Business AI, the platform will enable connected, data-driven healthcare processes. This technological foundation provides a unified, compliant, and extensible environment for the secure exchange of healthcare data and the controlled operation of AI models.

Another central focus is the support of modern hospital information systems in line with SAP’s “AnyEMR” strategy. Through open industry standards such as HL7 FHIR, seamless integration of hospital information systems, electronic health records, and additional medical applications will be enabled. Interoperability thus becomes a cornerstone of digital transformation in healthcare.

Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius, emphasized that the partnership enables a sovereign European solution in which data and AI can be used securely, easily, and at scale in daily clinical practice – ultimately creating more time for what truly matters: patient care.

The combination of SAP’s leading technology and Fresenius’ deep healthcare expertise sets new benchmarks for data sovereignty, security, and innovation, enabling the sustainable improvement of patient care worldwide.

Investment and Collaboration

As part of the joint transformation initiative, SAP and Fresenius plan to invest a mid-three-digit million euro amount over the medium term. The partnership includes joint technological development, coordinated governance structures, and shared investments in start-ups and scale-ups. With this collaboration, both companies are sending a strong signal for the future of digital healthcare in Europe.
