Together Against Cancer: HSV, HanseMerkur and yeswecan!cer send a powerful message for cancer prevention with special jerseys against Borussia Dortmund
On November 8, Hamburger SV will take to the pitch against Borussia Dortmund in special jerseys featuring the logo of the cancer self-help organization yeswecan!cer. HSV’s main partner HanseMerkur will forgo its own logo for this match day – making room for a message that can truly save lives: “Prevention can save lives!”
One in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. Yet cancer prevention – especially among men – is often neglected. The joint initiative by HSV, HanseMerkur and yeswecan!cer aims to change that: to inform, encourage, and show that responsibility and team spirit matter both on and off the field.
The campaign is part of the awareness initiative #MenAgainstCancer (#MännerGegenKrebs), launched by HanseMerkur and yeswecan!cer earlier this year. Coinciding with “Movember,” the international month dedicated to men’s health, the focus is on motivating men to take part in regular check-ups.
⚽ Match-Worn Jerseys for a Good Cause
After the match, the worn special jerseys will be auctioned on hsv.de. The proceeds will support a yeswecan!cer campaign encouraging young people to get the HPV vaccination, which protects against viruses that can cause several types of cancer. Fans can thus own a unique collector’s item while actively contributing to the fight against cancer.
💬 Voices of Support
HSV board member Eric Huwer emphasizes:
“Some victories are greater than what happens on the pitch. Our partner HanseMerkur giving up its logo for yeswecan!cer is a strong sign of solidarity.”
Eric Bussert, board member of HanseMerkur, adds:
“Prevention and early detection are key to a long and healthy life. That’s why we’re freeing up the jersey chest at the match against Dortmund – for a message that truly matters.”
Dr. Tobias Korenke, Managing Director of yeswecan!cer, says:
“With yeswecan!cer, we want to bring cancer into the center of society. Only together can we save lives.”
Prof. Dr. Heinzer from the Martini-Klinik adds:
“Each year, more men in Germany are diagnosed with prostate cancer than there are seats in the Volksparkstadion. Early detection can make all the difference – the chances of full recovery are excellent.”
🩺 HALLO DOC! and Stadium Activities
The campaign kicks off with the HALLO DOC! event “Prostate Cancer” on November 5 at the St. Pauli Spirit Klubhaus. Experts, patients, and public figures will discuss prevention, diagnostics, and coping strategies. On match day, yeswecan!cer will also have information stands and advisors available in the stadium.
A broad media campaign, including coverage by the FUNKE Media Group and social media activities, accompanies the initiative. Under the hashtag #WeAgainstCancer (#WirGegenKrebs), fans and supporters can share their stories and experiences. Through Doctolib, check-up appointments can be booked quickly and easily – on match day and beyond.
