Self-Medication Strengthens Healthcare: OTC Market Posts Strong Growth in 2024
The non-prescription medicine market continued its upward trajectory in 2024. According to the latest “OTC Data 2025” published by the German Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (BPI), the OTC sector saw a 7.1% increase in revenue and a 2.5% rise in sales volume. This confirms self-medication as a vital and growing component of Germany’s pharmaceutical supply system.
More than half of all medicine packs sold were over-the-counter products. In 2024, approximately 53% of all pharmaceutical packs dispensed were non-prescription – a clear indication of rising patient responsibility and autonomy. Since most OTC expenses are paid out-of-pocket, this segment significantly reduces the financial burden on statutory health insurance (GKV).
Stable performance amid economic uncertainty. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, labor shortages, and increasing production costs, the OTC market has remained resilient. Demand for common self-medication products like cold remedies, painkillers, and dietary supplements stayed strong, even though 2024 was free of unusually severe cold or flu waves.
“Made in Germany” continues to be a hallmark of quality. Around 80% of pharmaceutical companies operating in Germany are active in the OTC sector. With deep manufacturing integration, strong regional ties, and a high number of skilled jobs, these companies contribute significantly to the German economy. OTC manufacturers not only ensure consistent supply but also deliver innovation and high-quality products developed through independent research.
Self-medication will remain a cornerstone of future healthcare. As the population ages and public healthcare resources become more strained, self-medication will play an increasingly important role – both in maintaining individual health and in sustaining the healthcare system as a whole.
