129th German Medical Assembly in Leipzig: Politics, AI, and Key Decisions for the Healthcare Sector
From May 27 to 30, 2025, Leipzig becomes the center of German healthcare policy. The 129th German Medical Assembly (in German: Deutscher Ärztetag) is convening at the Congress Center Leipzig, with an opening ceremony in the iconic St. Nicholas Church attended by around 1,000 guests – including Federal Health Minister Nina Warken. This marks her first public appearance with the medical profession since taking office.
250 delegates from the “Parliament of Physicians” will spend four days deliberating on key health policy issues. Central to the assembly will be the general debate on the healthcare plans of the new federal government. The medical community will provide critical input, offer practical implementation strategies, and highlight gaps in the current political agenda.
A major focus of this year’s event is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare delivery and research. Together with leading experts, the assembly will explore medical, scientific, and ethical perspectives on AI, aiming to shape its responsible integration into the future of medicine.
Further topics include a long-awaited reform of the medical fee schedule – a pivotal move toward modernizing physician remuneration. Additionally, the assembly will address medical aspects of abortion, contributing professional insight to a socially and politically sensitive issue.
This week, Leipzig is the heartbeat of German healthcare policy. The decisions and recommendations made during the German Medical Assembly are expected to have a lasting impact on the country’s healthcare landscape.
