Web analytics - The importance of digital data analysis in pharmaceutical and healthcare marketing

What is web analytics?

Web analytics examines website usage through defined measurements. Marketing and editorial teams can assess requested content, difficulties and completed goals. Measurement should start with a concrete question rather than collecting as much information as possible.

A page view is a technical event. It establishes neither reading nor understanding or application of medical information. Reporting needs to state those limitations.

Which metrics need to be distinguished?

Events record actions, sessions group interactions within a defined period, and user metrics depend on technical identification. One person may appear several times across devices. Unmeasured visits remain a possible gap.

The GA4 bounce rate is the proportion of sessions that were not engaged. By default, engagement requires more than ten seconds, a key event or at least two page or screen views. An exit page instead identifies the final recorded page interaction of a session. These measures are different.

How should measurement be implemented?

A measurement plan defines the event, trigger, counting rule, source and analytical purpose. Registration should count as successful only after actual completion. Check duplicate events, internal tests and identifiable bot activity.

Changes to events or consent logic can affect comparisons over time. Reports therefore need a documented measurement configuration. Attribution allocates goal actions to contacts using a model; it does not establish causation.

Which privacy questions matter?

The legal basis, device access, information scope, recipients and retention depend on actual implementation. First-party cookies, a company server or EU hosting do not replace assessment. Matomo and other self-hosted products are not automatically compliant because of their name.

Health details, email addresses and free text should not enter URLs or analytics events without assessment. Pseudonymization is not anonymization. HIPAA applies to specified US entities and business associates rather than every healthcare website.

Conclusion: Information needs an understandable meaning

Useful analytics connects relevant questions with verified collection. Definitions and measurement gaps belong alongside the figures. An actionable finding identifies a concrete improvement and distinguishes technical usage from knowledge, behavior and medical benefit.
