Pharmaceutical sales representatives - The interface between the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare sector
Contents
What do pharmaceutical representatives do?
Pharmaceutical representatives inform healthcare professionals about medicines and manage professional contacts for a company. German medicines law uses the term Pharmaberater for the relevant activity. Scientific information, communication and established feedback processes work together.
The role differs from providing medical treatment and from scientific positions such as medical science liaison. A sales interaction must not be presented as independent treatment advice.
Which knowledge requirements apply?
Section 75 AMG specifies the necessary knowledge and qualifying routes. These include particular listed degrees and vocational qualifications, as well as qualification as a Pharmareferent. Recognition of an equivalent qualification by the responsible authority may also be relevant.
Not every science degree or marketing course automatically satisfies the requirements. The provision also covers the corresponding information by telephone. Companies need a defensible assessment of suitability for the actual activity.
Which tasks and duties matter?
Tasks can include professional discussions, provision of approved product information, agreed follow-up and documentation. Statements need to fit the current authorization and advertising requirements.
Section 76 AMG includes provision of the summary of product characteristics when informing professionals about individual medicines. Reports from healthcare professionals about adverse reactions, contraindications or other risks must be recorded and communicated to the company. Such information should not be withheld pending the representative's own confirmation.
How do digital channels affect the work?
Telephone calls, video discussions and digital resources can complement visits. Audience eligibility, contact permissions and approved content remain relevant in these formats. Documentation and handovers should reflect the next step actually agreed.
Questions beyond the intended discussion require an appropriate internal contact. Training should therefore cover product knowledge and the boundaries between promotion, medical information and safety reporting.
Conclusion: Combine information quality with dependable feedback
Pharmaceutical representatives connect company communication with professional information needs. Appropriate knowledge, current materials and reliable safety processes are essential. Contact volumes or sales alone do not fully describe the quality of the work.
