Oxford University Press strengthens its academic portfolio through the acquisition of the renowned medical publisher Karger Publishers

Oxford University Press (OUP) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Swiss medical and scientific publisher Karger Publishers. The transaction is expected to be completed in December.

With this acquisition, OUP and Karger unite two historic publishing houses that share a commitment to academic excellence, integrity, and global knowledge dissemination. The merger will integrate Karger’s outstanding portfolio in medicine and health sciences into the broader structure of Oxford University Press.

OUP is one of the world’s oldest and largest university presses. As a department of the University of Oxford, its mission is to advance research, scholarship, and education worldwide. Every year, OUP publishes thousands of trusted research books and journals across a wide range of disciplines.

Founded in 1890 in Switzerland, Karger Publishers is a highly respected academic publisher with nearly 100 leading medical journals and more than 9,000 books in medicine and health sciences. Eighty-two of its journals are indexed in the Science Citation Index with Impact Factor rankings – proof of the publisher’s exceptional quality and influence.

Gabriella Karger, Chairwoman of Karger Publishers, emphasized:

“We undertook an extensive process to identify the most suitable partner, and we are convinced that Oxford University Press represents the best possible choice. OUP shares the same values that have guided us for generations – quality, integrity, and academic excellence.”

Nigel Portwood, CEO of Oxford University Press, added:

“We are delighted to welcome Karger colleagues, authors, editors, and their broader community to OUP. Both publishers share a focus on the highest standards of quality and scholarly integrity. Together, we create a strong foundation to serve researchers and professionals in medicine and health sciences well into the future.”

This acquisition marks another major step for OUP in strengthening its global leadership in academic publishing and making Karger’s medical expertise accessible to an even wider audience.
