Bayer strengthens innovation: New Darmstadt lab for plant-based health solutions inaugurated

Bayer Consumer Health has celebrated the inauguration of a state-of-the-art laboratory for phytomedicine and biotics. The investment highlights the strong commitment to the Darmstadt site and is set to significantly boost the company’s innovative strength.

This lab is a game-changer for our company,” said Chloé Picot, Site Head in Darmstadt. “It gives our world-class team the ability to develop prototypes in-house, enabling us to bring innovations to life faster and more efficiently.”

The celebration marks a key milestone in Bayer’s more than 60-year history in plant-based medicines. The success story began in the 1960s with the development of Iberogast, which has since become an internationally recognized phytopharmaceutical. More than 100 million patients worldwide have already benefited from its proven efficacy.

The new research facility will serve as a hub for ongoing innovation – not only for Iberogast but also for other plant-based and biotic health solutions. Close collaboration between different teams enables rapid prototyping of new formulations and strengthens competitiveness.

Thorsten Umland, Head of R&D in Gut Health at Bayer, emphasized: “This facility is clear evidence of Bayer’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for natural health solutions. We are building on our leadership in phytomedicine and ensuring that Bayer continues to develop innovations that are scientifically proven and trusted by consumers.”

With its new laboratory, Bayer is sending a strong signal: the company aims to set new standards in phytomedicine and accelerate the development of sustainable, natural health solutions.
